WGNA Meeting on  4/28/09

The meeting was called to order at 7:08 PM by President Ellen Fong.  As there was no secretary and no treasurer present, the reading of the last minutes and the financial report were skipped. Ellen asked for volunteers to form a phone committee to increase the number of people attending.  Richard McGough volunteered and then several people were given a sheet of phone numbers to call.  Ellen asked Ken Agee if the listings of the Yard of the Month were available and he told her they were loaded to the web site.  Each side of Walnut Street gets an award.  It was also reported there were plans to start a neighborhood association on the other side of Walnut.

Unfinished Business:

Ellen reminded everyone that the Rotary Club had 3X5 American flags available to rent for $35 dollars.  Contact Melissa Wright at 214-660-7941.  They deliver and pick up the flag when you ask for it.

Code Enforcement:  Council Woman Barbara Chick was in attendance and noted that the Coding Department was operating with a reduced staff.  She suggested calling during the week when the staff was more able to handle the calls.  She mentioned that this district will be getting coding sweeps every other month.  She also answered and addressed several member’s personal problems in this area.  Suggestion was made to have someone from the Coding Dept. come next time.  Ms. Chick quickly agreed that she would have someone there at the July 28th meeting  to answer questions.

Recreation Department:

Harry Hollabaugh Recreation Center:   David Greer and Lorrie Dotson of the Recreation Dept. were in attendance and gave an update on activities there.  The new recreation center is due to start soon with the walking track to be built first, then the building.

All baseball fields in Garland will be eliminated and the fields will go “green”, allowing easy multiuse on the fields, more able to handle football, soccer, or baseball, if desired.

Only one entrance into Garland does not have a “Welcome to Garland” sign on it.  As soon as water is hooked up to the site on Jupiter Road, it will be put in.

The City of Garland Forest Preserves are continuing to grow and near completion of connecting walking trails (8’ width) with other sites and preserves to allow walking trails nearly completely around Garland and connecting to other suburbs.  David noted Garland had received 1M from Dallas County for the Forest Preserve.

It was noted that there will be NO 4th of July activities sponsored by the City of Garland this year.

There was no new business.

The meeting was adjourned at 8 PM.
