2023 Joint & Special Elections                  4/23 K.Agee

Dallas County will be administering “Joint and Special Elections” this year, with early voting between April 24th & May 2nd, and the actual day of voting on Saturday May 6th.

Since the boundaries of the West Garland Neighborhood Association (WGNA) exactly match the City of Garland’s District 6, our choices will be the same.  In our case, we will be asked to choose between two Mayoral candidates (incumbent Scott LeMay, and challenger Roel Garcia).  There is only one declared candidate for our District 6’s City Council seat: Carissa Dutton.

The Garland Independent School District (GISD) will have three Propositions on the ballot.  They are as follows:

Prop A:  $1,103,000,000 for safety & security upgrades, removal of all portable buildings with construction of four new elementary campuses, renovations & improvements to all campuses (including ADA-accessible playgrounds), plus various upgrades for athletics, lockers, etc.  It also includes funds to upgrade the transportation center, computer networks, and the addition of a new agricultural center.

Prop B:  $135,900,000 for new “Multi-Program Activity Centers” at all high schools.  They will be used by bands, drill teams, cheerleading, special-ed students, athletic teams, etc.

Prop C:  $40,600,000 for several technology enhancements at every school.  This includes refreshing the 1:1 student devices (including for teachers).

GISD says that “homeowners 65 and older with a Homestead Exemption will not see an increase in their property taxes”.  However, if all three propositions pass, there will be an additional tax burden of $0.0661 per $100 of taxed valuation.  That means the overall rate would go from $0.3179 to $0.3840 per $100.  Additional details can be found here:  https://garlandisd.net/about/bond-2023.
