UNIDOS Information (followup to 3Q WGNA meeting)                           8/6/13  K.Agee

One of the items we discussed at our 3rd quarter WGNA meeting (7 p.m. 7/25/13 at the Christian Church, Lawler @ Jupiter) was the UNIDOS program which is sponsored by the Garland Police Department.

This is a Hispanic outreach program designed to provide assistance to Spanish-speaking residents in the area.  UNIDOS meetings are held entirely in Spanish and similar meetings are also held by other Police Departments such as Dallas, Richardson, Plano, Grand Prairie, and Rockwall.

Following are typical items that might be discussed:

> Details of the criminal justice system

> Discussion on cultural differences

> Building trust with the police

> Questions to the Garland Police Department

> How to register as inspect vehicles

> How to get a driver's license and car insurance

> Advice for how to legally seek employment

Meetings will be held four times yearly, on the 2nd Tuesday of the months of February, May, August, and November.  Start time is 7:00 pm at the Garland Police Station, located at 1891 Forest Lane, Garland, Texas 75042.

The next several meeting dates are scheduled for:

August 13, 2013

November 12, 2013
