3rd Quarter WGNA Meeting Summary                      7/25/14  K.Agee

Our 3rd quarter WGNA meeting (7/24/14 at the Christian Church, Lawler @ Jupiter) featured an update from our District 6 City Councilwoman Lori Dodson.  Following are some highlights:

Ř  The City Council was recently briefed about the declining condition of our streets, along with recommendations for correcting the problem.  At issue is the loss of about $750,000 from the General Funds during the recession, declining CDBG (Community Development Block Grant, from Federal HUD program) funds, and the ever-increasing traffic in the City.  CW Dodson explained how the Streets Dept monitors the quality of our streets thru a “Pavement Control Index” or PCI and needs to keep that level above a certain number to avoid much more costly repairs if the street were to actually fail.  The plan is to restore cash flow from the General Funds (enough to eventually recover what was missing during the recession), and to enact a 2-cent property tax increase (amounts to about $66/yr for a $100,000 house, reduced for seniors) for a 5-year period.

Ř  The old Dairy Queen restaurant on Plano Rd just south of Buckingham has finally been sold, and is set to become a Mexican restaurant (opening date not currently known).

Ř  The upgrade to the rolling blue recycle containers (and expanded ranged of accepted items) is progressing, but is currently only in stage 3 of the 5 stages.  The team has a system where each district gets certain streets upgraded, so it’s just a matter of time…

There still seems to be issues in the extreme southwest part of our district (Yale, north of Forest Lane), where trucks are still being parked in the streets illegally, and there were complaints about dubious street repairs in that same general area (on Yale) where asphalt patches seem insufficient.

We decided to hold the next quarterly WGNA meeting at the Walnut Creek Branch Library’s meeting room.  This is our neighborhood library, located at 3319 Edgewood Dr.  This is just east of Jupiter – click here to see a map.  The meeting will be at the usual time, the 4th Thursday of October (23rd), starting at 7 p.m.
