Garland-Baylor Hospital closes 3/1/2018                                           3/30/18  K.Agee

After over 50 years, Garland’s only full-service hospital closed it’s doors on March 1st.  This is after it’s owner Baylor Scott & White failed to find a buyer for the facility.  Residents should now re-think their options for medical needs, especially Emergency Room visits.

At issue was the overabundance of hospitals in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, coupled with declining usage.  It is still possible that the site will reopen at some point, but for now it is closed.

Baylor states that patients who have used the hospital in the past will not need to do anything with regards to their medical records as long as they stay within the Baylor Medical System.  However, there may be some fees related to sharing them with other providers such as Methodist, Presbyterian, etc.  Baylor suggests letting your new Hospital System contact Baylor for the records, or you can call their Health Information Management Department at 214-820-2135 if there are any problems.

Baylor says they have communicated this shutdown with all of the other service-providers (even the ambulance services).   They point out that current counts show there are 71 Urgent Care centers in the area, 48 Ambulatory Surgery Centers, 21 Hospitals, and 11 free-standing Emergency Departments.
