David Greer retires from Parks & Rec board                              8/14/12  Ken Agee

At our 3rd quarter WGNA meeting (7/26/12) Robert Vera pointed out that David Greer will be stepping down from his position of District 6 Representative for Garland’s Parks & Recreation Department.  We all gave him a round of applause and thanks for a job well done, but few people realize the extent of David’s commitment to our District and to the Parks & Rec operation.

During the 8/7/12 City Council Meeting, Mayor Ronald Jones gave David a Special Recognition award and presentation, and brought out the following details:

Ø       David was first appointed to the board in 1988, and his officially recognized contributions were for at least 20 years.

Ø      Over the years, he served as Vice Chairman of the Board, Chairman of Parks Facilities, as well as the Finance, and Program Policy Committees.

Ø      He was a longtime member of the Garland Baseball Association Board of Directors.

Ø      In 2007 he founded the Garland Tree Board, which is behind the slogan “Tree City USA”.

Ø      During his tenure, he helped achieve improvements such as ball fields, playground, and picnic facilities for our local parks (Norman Groves, Lottie Watson, & Montgomery), and did a lot of background work for making the Harris Hollabaugh facility become a reality.

Mayor Jones said it well, that service to the community is a very noble cause.  Everyone in District 6, whether they realize it or not, owes a debt of gratitude for David’s tireless work.
