Library Sponsors ‘One Book, One Garland’ 7/24 K.Agee
The Garland Library and Friends of the Library are sponsoring a reading program called ‘One Book, One Garland’ which runs from Saturday June 8th thru Saturday September 28th. The idea is to have participants of this program all read the same book, and later meet as a group to discuss it. The bonus is that the group will have an opportunity to visit with the author at three different events in late September.
The book is a 400 page fictional mystery book titled “Hard Country” by Reavis Z. Wortham. The storyline has the main character being a veteran undercover narcotics agent who was given special privileges by the Governor to take on the criminal elements of NE Texas. Tragedy strikes when his wife & toddler child are killed in a car wreck caused by a drug-influenced felon. You’ll have to read the book to go from there…
The program is already underway, with copies of the book being available in print, ebook format, and even as an audio book. Downloadable copies can had by going to this webpage: https://libbyapp.com/library/nmls
‘One Book, One Garland’ is mostly run from the City’s South Garland Branch Library, and that’s where the follow-up (free) meetings will be held:
Ø On Saturday 9/14 at 6 p.m., the author, Mr. Wortham will do a presentation about his journey to publication of his book. It will end with a question-and-answer session, complete with wine and light refreshments.
Ø On Thursday 9/19 at 7 p.m. (also at the S.Garland Branch Library), there will be an informal discussion between Mr. Worthham and an interviewer about the origins of the book, how the characters were defined, and the writing process itself. It will end with light refreshments and Q&A between the audience & the author.
Ø On Friday 9/20 at 6 p.m. (same place), there will be an opportunity for writers of all skill-levels to discuss the trade with Mr. Worthham. Being an experienced author, he will share some of his wisdom, and note-taking is encouraged.
Ø On Saturday 9/28 from 10:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. attendees are encouraged to attend a ‘CrimeCon’ event. This exposes the audience to the science, logic, and techniques of crime-solving. There will be interactive forensic stations, and you’ll be able to test your knowledge with true-crime trivia and be able to make your own “crime scene bookmark”. Lunch will be provided there at the South Garland Branch Library.
